I took my first Bikram yoga class in November 2006. Prior to trying Bikram yoga, I did step aerobics and weights 4-5 times a week. I loved the intensity and physical challenge. A co-worker told me I should try this "hot" yoga thing, but I had tried a couple of yoga classes and didn't care for them because I just didn't feel that I had really gotten a good hard workout. Plus, in my mind, Bikram yoga sounded like working out in a sauna and I could hardly stand being in a sauna for more then a few minutes, so Bikram was not a consideration. A few months later I found myself hearing the word Bikram again. This time, some friends in my bible study were singing its praises. Although I was sure that I would probably pass out from the heat, I thought why not give it a try? Nervous and praying they wouldn't have to call an ambulance for me; I took my first class. Thankfully, I didn't pass out! I left class exhilarated and feeling physically spent and incredible all at once.
In the year that I have been practicing I have experienced a lot of changes and I will share just a few with you: PAIN FREE: When I started practicing Bikram, I was experiencing chronic lower back pain that I just couldn't shake. After 3-4 weeks of Bikram classes, my pain was completely gone!
INCREASED FLEXIBILITY: I have never been what I would consider flexible, and always thought it was just something I could never attain. NOT! Bikram has shown me that with time and consistent practice you really can gain flexibility.
LETTING GO: Perhaps the toughest thing for me to learn is to relax. I am competitive and have always approached exercise in attack mode. I am just now getting to the point where I can allow myself to take each class, pose and breath individually.
I will be honest, when my alarm goes off at 4:25 a.m., I often think I must be nuts, but when class is over I am always glad I made the effort. This is by far, the most challenging form of exercise I have ever tried.
In my opinion, what truly makes the experience at Bikram Grapevine so rewarding has to be the staff. Everyone is so knowledgeable, kind and encouraging and I appreciate each of you.
Thank you for choosing me as the December student of the month and allowing me to share my journey to Bikram!
